By the time, you surely have heard: the Pokemon Go videogame made its big entry in many countries of the world. It’s hard not to hear about this revolutionary game that has beaten Twitter’s use record in only five days. What’s the link with Serious Factory and its authoring tool? We’re glad you ask and we’ll gladly answer this question in this article!
Pokemon? This summer’s surprise…
As we speak, many articles have detailed the many ways to ride the Pokémon Go waves. Many of them seem to have agreed to talk about the game as the new educational tool to motivate students and make them love learning.
To do this, they tell us to use some specific features of the application, such as its GPS or augmented reality, to push students to create, improve their geographical knowledge, exercise, socialize… Teachers want to use Pokemon Go to develop the spirit of observation, reflection and empathy of their students. A trip to the museum to catch Pokémon and learn about the country’s history? It’s what teachers suggest today.
Why are we telling you about this?
Don’t worry; Serious Factory does not intend to make you catch the famous little monsters in your Serious Games. However, we could not help but jump at the chance to show you the benefits of current video games and the use of new technologies in the education field.
Pokemon is far from being the only one, much less the first game that can be likened to the learning area, as since long ago video games have been known for their potential in the field of education and even today in Digital Learning. Games appear as a real transgenerational tool which, like Immersive Learning, is a real opportunity to exchange and debate. In addition, Nintendo has well understood it, it is necessary to use the latest technologies to better immerse players. We are therefore not surprised that one of the strengths of Pokemon Go is the use of augmented reality on mobile.
It is an equally effective technology in the field of Immersive Learning, since we have also chosen to use its namesake, virtual reality, in our training simulations. We bring along a distinct advantage to the digital training: total immersion in a realistic situation for an effective and relevant training.
Video games and virtual reality, our best allies for training?
Everyone is now involved in video games, and companies have become aware of this issue, using it as a promotional and pedagogic tool. This usage in the workplace, called gamification, tends to spread and becomes a tool “that exploits the mechanical and cognitive process of games to engage collaborators” (Gabe Zichermann).
Gamification applied to the professional training allows to place the learner at the heart of the story and action, maximizing the rate of involvement and memorization. It is also recognized that video games and their codes put the learner in a problem-solving kind of learning. This mode of training promotes motivation, commitment and deep understanding.
Although they may be for all, video games are an efficient tool to reach out to younger people. Many countries already seem to have understood that, since in the United States Serious Games for the school area are increasing in recent years.
France however still seems to be largely lagging behind on this field. Or maybe not … Serious Factory has wondered about that, and is preparing some surprises for that in the fall…
